Zastron is a small agricultural town situated along the R726 Regional Route in the Free State province of South Africa, approximately 30 km from the border of Lesotho.
The town is located approximately 50.3 km north-west of Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape province, 33.5 km north-west of Rouxville, and 39.3 km south-east of Van Stadensrus.
, Zastron town is situated at the foot of Aasvoëlberg (Vulture Mountain), named for the rare Cape vultures attracted by a feeding project a short distance out of town. The township in Zastron is named “Matlakeng”, Sesotho for Vultures.
This region was once a haven for the nomadic San, but unfortunately changed due to quarrelling between the San, Basotho and the Voortrekkers. Jan de Winnaar eventually won and formed the farm Verliesfontein. The town was founded in 1875 on this farm, and named after Johanna Sibella Brand (born Zastron), the wife of Johannes Henricus Brand, the 4th State President of the Orange Free State.
