The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a public university of technology and science situated in Mthatha, Butterworth, East London (Buffalo City), and Komani (Queenstown) in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
The University was established on 1 July 2005 after the merger of Eastern Cape Technikon, Border Technikon, and University of Transkei.
The University is named after Walter Sisulu, a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and a prominent figure in the struggle against apartheid.
The university has positioned itself as a centre of academic excellence committed to its vision of being a technology infused African university.
WSU is uniquely positioned to play a powerful role in the national government’s focus on rural development in particular, thus primarily serving the poor and working-class individuals.
