Villiers, Free State

Villiers is a small beautiful town situated on the banks of the Vaal River next to the N3 National Route in the Free State province of South Africa, on the border with Mpumalanga province.

The town is located at the intersection of the N3, R26 and R103 roads, approximately 33 km from Frankfort, 385km north-east of Bloemfontein, 121 km south-east of Johannesburg in Gauteng, and 454 km north-west of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.

The town was founded at the Vaal River crossing on the route between Johannesburg and Durban in 1882, on the two farms Grootdraai and Pearson Valley, owned by Lourens de Villiers, who the town is named after.

Villiers was proclaimed by State President F.W. Reitz on 29 May 1891, and is part of the Mafube Local Municipality in the Fezile Dabi District Municipality.

Villiers is considered to be the prettiest town in the region because of its manicured gardens and canna blooms.
