Victoria West is a town situated in the central Karoo region of South Africa in the Northern Cape Province, at the intersection of the N12 National Route and R63 Provincial Route.
Victoria West lies at an elevation of 1,300 metres (4,300 ft). The town is located approximately 12.5 km north-west of Hutchinson on the R63 highway and 54 km south-west of Merriman.
Victoria West falls within the Ubuntu Local Municipality and the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality. Victoria West is the main town and administrative centre/seat of Ubuntu Local Municipality.
History
Victoria West was laid out on the bank of the Brakrivier watercourse in 1843, when the Dutch Reformed Church bought the farm Zeekoegat from the estate of J.H. Classens.
The town was named Victoria in 1844, after Queen Victoria. However, it was later amended to Victoria West in 1855 to distinguish it from a district in the Eastern Cape. In 1859, the town acquired municipal status.
