The name of the town, Verkeerdevlei, means “wrong marsh” in Afrikaans. This name is most probably derived from the stream in town that flows in an east-west direction in an area where the direction is normally west-east.
The town is situated approximately 43 km south-east of Brandfort (officially renamed to Winnie Mandela), 73 km north-east of Bloemfontein in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, and 54 km south-west of Winburg.
