Utrecht is a town situated at the foothills of the Balele Mountains, in the northwestern corner of the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa, approximately 50 km from Newcastle, the Province’s third-largest urban centre.
Utrecht is the main town and administrative centre/seat of the eMadlangeni Local Municipality, which is part of the Amajuba District Municipality.
The town is named after Utrecht, a Dutch city with the same name, as a result of Dutch settlers in the region.
Coal mining and cattle ranching are the predominant economic activities in Utrecht.
