University of Limpopo (UL)

The University of Limpopo (UL) is a public university located in Mankweng (also known as Turfloop) in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

Overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the National Government of South Africa, the University of Limpopo was formed on 1 January 2005, by the merger of former Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) and the University of the North.

These previous institutions formed the MEDUNSA and Turfloop campuses of the university, respectively. On May 16 2014, the MEDUNSA campus was gazatted to stand alone – splittling from the University of Limpopo to become the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

Historically known as the centre of apartheid resistance until the 1980s, the University of Limpopo often attracted the attention of apartheid SA’s security forces.

The University of Limpopo offers programmes in Health Sciences, Humanities, Science and Agriculture and Management and Law.

On Friday 11 July 2025, the University of Limpopo announced that it had appointed Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele as its incoming Vice-Chancellor and Principal, with effect from 1 January 2026, succeeding Professor Mahlo Mokgalong who has been at the academic institution for more than five decades – starting as a student and rising through the academic and administrative ranks.
