University of Fort Hare (UFH)

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is a public university in Alice in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

The University of Fort Hare was founded in the 1900s solely for black students in South Africa – and thus it has a rich history for producing numerous acclaimed African leaders.

The University was a key institution of higher education for Africans from 1916 to 1959 when it offered a Western-style academic education to students from across sub-Saharan Africa, creating an African elite. Fort Hare alumni were part of many subsequent independence movements and governments of newly independent African countries.

In 1959, the university was subsumed by the apartheid system, but it is now part of South Africa’s post-apartheid public higher education system.

The University of Fort Hare is the alma mater of well-known people including Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe, Desmond Tutu, and others.

UFH is on a mission to redefine itself and to enhance student experience by incorporating the principles of transformation, equity, and the socio-economic contextualisation of its strategic plan.

The University of Fort Hare has its main administration in Alice in the Eastern Cape Province.

The University is overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the National Government of South Africa.
