Ulco is a self-sustaining and private cement mining town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is situated about 10 km from the Vaal River, 15 km north-west of Delportshoop, and 60 km south-west of Warrenton.
The town of Ulco was established around the mining activities of the Union Lime Company in 1949 to offer housing to its employees. Electricity was also supplied to the area in 1949 for the first time.
The town’s name is derived from the company’s name, Union Lime Company.
The town is a site of extensive lime works. In 2009 it still had reserves for 150 years.
The town has two schools namely Ulco Intermediate School and Ulco Primary School.
Ulco has a desert like climate, the highest temperature ever measured is 44 °C and the coldest is -9°C.
Ulco falls within the Dikgatlong Local Municipality under the Frances Baard District Municipality of the Northern Cape Province.
