Tweeling

Tweeling is a small town situated on the R26 Provincial Route, approximately 37.4 km from Frankfort, in the Free State province of South Africa.

The town was laid out and established in 1920 on the two farms Tweelingspruit and Tweelingkop, their names derived from two similar looking hills just outside the town. This then gives the town its name, Tweeling, which means “twins” in Dutch and Afrikaans.

Tweeling is situated just east of the Liebenbergsvlei River which is a conduit for water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

Majority of Tweeling’s residents speak the Sotho language. Eiderdowns are locally made by geese farmers which provides the down.

The near township is named Mafahlaneng, or “place of twins”.
