Tswaing Local Municipality is geographically located in the southern region of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
Tswaing Local Municipality comprises 14 wards and covers an area of 5,875 km² (2,268 square miles), making it the third-largest of five local municipalities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, as it accounts for almost a quarter of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of Tswaing Local Municipality is in Delareyville.
Tswaing Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Ratlou and Mahikeng Local Municipalities to the north
- Ditsobotla Local Municipality to the north and northeast

Tswaing Local Municipality provides all the basic services in its area of jurisdiction except for water and sanitation, which are provided by the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
The data from Global Insight Regional Explorer, 593, indicate that there has been tremendous improvement in the allocation of services to communities in the Tswaing Local Municipality, especially housing, water, electricity, and sanitation.
Despite these positive results, the municipality still faces challenges concerning backlogs in the provision of basic services of water, electricity, sanitation, roads and street lighting.
The main reason for this is that the municipality has experienced an increase in population in the past 10 years, partly due to evictions of people in the surrounding farms and partly because of the natural growth of the population.
The municipality is home to a popular tourist attraction, the Tswaing Crater, a 1,946-hectare conservation area that is home to a meteorite impact crater.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, Tswaing Local Municipality has a population of 128,672 people, compared to 129,052 in 2016 and 124,218 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.34%.
According to the 2022 Census, 32.7% of the population is under the age of 15, 61.2% is between 15 and 64, and 6.1% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 89.1% of the population in Tswaing Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 8.2% as White, 1.9% as Coloured, and 0.6% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 78.6% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 9.8% speak Afrikaans, 3% speak isiXhosa, 2.4% speak English, and 6.2% speak other languages.

The main economic sectors of Tswaing Local Municipality are agriculture and small-scale mining.

Municipal council and management
The municipality is under S139 administration, effective from January 2022.
The Tswaing municipal council is comprised of 28 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Fourteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 14 wards, while the remaining 14 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 19 seats on the council.
