Tsolo, Eastern Cape

Tsolo is a town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa situated at the intersection of the N2 National Route and the R396 Regional Route, approximately 29 km south-west of Qumbu, 44 km north-west of Mthatha (formerly known as Umtata), and 57 km south-east of Nqanqarhu (formerly known as Maclear).

The town’s name, derived from Xhosa, is said to mean ‘pointed’, referring to the shape of the hills there.

Tsolo falls within the Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, which forms part of the OR Tambo District Municipality.

Tsolo has two hospitals funded by the Provincial Government, Dr. Malizo Mpehle Memorial Hospital and St Lucy’s Hospital.

It is home to several villages such as Goqwana, Hlangani, and Tiki-tiki, etc. With many rivers mostly from uGriniga Dam, which is a source of water for many villages, including Hlangani and Goqwana.
