Thembisile Hani Local Municipality is geographically located in the western part of the Nkangala District Municipality.
The municipality is named after Thembisile Chris Hani, the 11th Secretary General of the South African Communist Party, who was assassinated on 10 April 1993.
Thembisile Hani Local Municipality covers an area of 2,384 km² (920 square miles), making it the fourth-largest local municipality in the Nkangala District as it accounts for 14% of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of Thembisile Hani Local Municipality is in eMpumalanga.
The municipality is divided into 32 wards.
Thembisile Hani Local Municipality is bordered by:
