The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is a national public entity that serves as the key institutional intervention to bridge the innovation chasm between research and development from higher education institutions, science councils, public entities, and private sector, and commercialisation.
The Technology Innovation Agency is an entity of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSI) under the National Government of South Africa.
TIA promotes the development and exploitation of discoveries, inventions and innovations to improve the quality of life for all South Africans by bridging the innovation chasm between research and commercialisation.
The object of the Technology Innovation Agency is to support the State in stimulating and intensifying technological innovation to improve economic growth and the quality of life of all South Africans by developing and exploiting technological innovations.
TIA’s focus is on technology development; from proof of concept to pre commercialisation. To achieve this, TIA established the following funds:
- The Seed Fund
- The Technology Development Fund
- The Commercialisation Support Fund.
Mandate
The mandate of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is derived from the provisions of the Technology Innovation Act (Act 26 of 2008), which establishes TIA to promote the development and exploitation, in the public interest, of discoveries, inventions, innovations and improvements.
The objective of the Technology Innovation Agency is to support the State in stimulating and intensifying technological innovation to improve economic growth and the quality of life of all South Africans by developing and exploiting technological innovations.

The vision of the Technology Innovation Agency is to be a leading technology innovation agency that stimulates and supports technological innovation to improve the quality of life for all South Africans.

The mission of the Technology Innovation Agency it to facilitate the translation of South Africa’s knowledge resource into sustainable socio-economic opportunities.
