Sterkstroom is a village in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, situated at the intersection of the R344 and R397 Regional Routes, at the southern foot of the Stormberg, 272 km north-west of East London.
The village’s name, Sterkstroom, means ‘strong current or stream’ in Afrikaans, referring to the Hex River on which the village is situated.
Sterkstroom falls within the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality and the Chris Hani District Municipality.
Sterkstroom was founded in 1875 and became a municipality in 1878.
