Springfontein is a small mixed farming town situated on the N1 National Route in the southern region of the Free State province of South Africa. The town is located approximately 27.1 km south-west of Trompsburg and 140 km south-west of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital and judicial capital of South Africa.
Main access to Springfontein is gained through the N1 National Route between Bloemfontein and Colesberg and the R715 Regional Route.
The town derives its name from a strong artesian spring on the farm Springfontein. Hartleydale, part of this farm, was chosen as the site for the new village in 1904. Municipal status was granted in 1912.
The residents of this town keep themselves busy with mixed farming and outdoor activities. Springfontein is a crucial rail junction between the Eastern Cape and Gauteng.
