About

The Sekhukhune District Municipality was established in December 2000, it is geographically situated in the southern and southeastern parts of the Limpopo province.

This District is named after the natural region of Sekhukhuneland. Sekhukhuneland is named after the king of the Bapedi people, King Sekhukhune, who succeeded Sekwati in 1860 or 1861.

The District’s administrative headquarters/seat is in Groblersdal.

The Sekhukhune District Municipality covers an area of 13,528 km² (5,223 square miles). It is the smallest district in the Limpopo province, making up approximately 11% of the province’s geographical area.

The District is divided into four local municipalities namely;

  1. Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality
  2. Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality
  3. Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality
  4. Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality

Sekhukhune is mainly a rural district made up of 764 villages and 117 wards.

The District’s towns and villages are serviced by its major river, the Olifants River.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Sekhukhune District Municipality has a population of 1,336,805 residents, compared to 1,169,762 in 2016, and 1,076,840 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 2.1%.

According to the 2022 Census, 32.9% of the population is under the age of 15, 60.2% is between 15 and 64, and 6.9% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 98.6% of the Sekhukhune District Municipality population describe themselves as Black African, 1.1% as White, 0.2% as Coloured, and 0.1% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 82.2% of the population speaks Sepedi as their first language, 4.4% speak isiNdebele, 3.3% speak isiZulu, 2% speak Xitsonga, and 8.1% speak other languages.
