Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU)

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is a public medical university in Ga-Rankuwa, Gauteng, South Africa. Its current incarnation was formed on 1 January 2015.

The University was born when the former Medical University of Southern Africa campus (MEDUNSA) of the University of Limpopo was gazetted to stand alone on the 16th of May 2014.

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University combines teaching, learning and research with clinical practice and community service in Healthcare Sciences, Medicine, Oral Health, Pharmacy and Science and Technology.

The University is named after African National Congress (ANC) leader Sefako Makgatho.

The University is overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the National Government of South Africa.
