Salt Rock is a small, charming coastal village nestled along the stunning Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa, approximately 19 km south-east of KwaDukuza (formerly known as Stanger) and 52 km north-east of Durban.
The village is famous for its beautiful beaches, serene ambiance, and historic roots tied to Basil Hulett and his wife, Gwen, who not only helped establish the iconic Salt Rock Hotel, but also went on to develop the town of Salt Rock as found today.
A favorite holiday destination for many local South Africans, Salt Rock falls within the KwaDukuza Local Municipality, which is part of the iLembe District Municipality.
Located approximately 7 km north of Ballito, Salt Rock is bordered by Shaka’s Rock to the south, Simbithi Eco Estate to the southwest, the charming town of Umhlali to the west, and Sheffield Beach to the north.

Salt Rock is conveniently located with easy access to the N2 toll freeway, connecting it to KwaDukuza in the north and Durban in the south. Main routes include:
- Salt Rock Road – providing access from Umhlali in the west and a direct route to the N2 National Route
- Ocean Drive – links Salt Rock with nearby towns like Shaka’s Rock and Ballito in the south
Residential and Commercial Development
Over the past 20 years, Salt Rock has undergone rapid residential and commercial development, evolving from agricultural land into a highly sought-after residential and investment location. Key developments include: Dunkirk Estate (launched in 2003), Brettenwood Coastal Estate (launched in 2004), and New Salt Rock City (launched in 2010).
These estates combine modern luxury with coastal living. New Salt Rock City, in particular, is a master-planned precinct that includes: Mount Richmore Village Estate, New Salt Rock Shopping Centre (launched in 2018), and Curro Salt Rock School – part of South Africa’s leading private school network.
