About

The Rustenburg Local Municipality was established by North West Provincial Gazette No 5574 dated 29 September 2000 in terms of Section 12 of the Municipal Structures Act, Act 117 of 1998. Following this notice, existing municipalities were disestablished and the new Rustenburg Local Municipality came into being.

Rustenburg is situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range. Rustenburg (meaning ‘town of rest’ or ‘resting place’ in Afrikaans) was proclaimed a township in 1851.

Rustenburg Local Municipality is geographically located in the central and southern regions of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.

Rustenburg Local Municipality comprises 45 wards and covers an area of 3,416 km² (1,319 square miles), making it the second-smallest of five local municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District.

The administrative headquarters/seat of Rustenburg Local Municipality is in the city of Rustenburg, which is situated about 112 kilometres northwest of both Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, Rustenburg Local Municipality has a population of 562,031 people, compared to 626,522 in 2016 and 549,575 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.22%.

According to the 2022 Census, 24.7% of the population is under the age of 15, 71.3% is between 15 and 64, and 4% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 88.5% of the population in Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 9.4% as White, 0.9% as Coloured, and 0.8% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 53.9% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 9.9% speak Afrikaans, 9.6% speak isiXhosa, 5.6% speak Xitsonga, and 21% speak other languages.
