Rooigrond, North West

Rooigrond is a small settlement situated along the R503 Regional Route in the North West Province of South Africa, about 19.7 km south-east of Mahikeng and 32.4 km south-west of Ottoshoop.

The settlement’s name Rooigrond means ‘red ground’ in Afrikaans.

Rooigrond falls within the Mahikeng Local Municipality under the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality of the North West Province.

History

Rooigrond was formerly known as Vrywilligersrus and Heliopolis.

Part of the region of Rooigrond, ceded to Boer volunteers under Adriaan de la Rey by Tswana chiefs in the 1880s, became the republics of Goshen and Stellaland.

Rooigrond served as capital of the State of Goshen from 1882 to 1883.
