Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) – South Africa

The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) is an entity of the Department of Transport (DOT) under the National Government of South Africa.

The mission of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency is to encourage:

  • Compliance with road traffic laws in South Africa through targeted road user community education and communication programmes
  • Promotion of procedurally fair, lawful and reasonable administrative adjudication
  • Levying of penalties
  • Imposing of demerit points
  • Effective administration and management of the suspension and cancellation of driving licences and operator cards
  • Rewarding of compliant road users

The strategic outcome-orientated goals of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency are to:

  • Discourage and penalise contravention of road traffic laws
  • Encourage payment of penalties
  • Create public awareness and education
  • Administrate and resource the Road Traffic Infringement Agency
  • Roll-out the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) across South Africa
