Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA)

The Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (SOC) Limited (PetroSA) is the National Oil amd Gas Company (NOC) of South Africa.

The Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA), is a wholly state-owned entity of the Government of South Africa and registered as a commercial entity under the South African law.

PetroSA is a subsidiary of the Central Energy Fund SOC Ltd (CEF). CEF acts as a PetroSA shareholder on behalf of the Government and reports to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR).​

PetroSA was formed in January 2002 from the merger of three previous entities: Soekor (Pty) Limited, Mossgas (Pty) Limited, and parts of the Strategic Fuel Fund Association.

PetroSA is also member of the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA), having joined in 2002.

Mandate

The mandate of PetroSA is to ensure the security of energy suppy for South Africa.

Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA) is mandated to operate as a commercial entity that creates value for its shareholders and stakeholders.

The mandate includes ensuring the security of energy supply and advancing the broader national objective of the South African petroleum industry for the benefit of the country.

Purpose

The core strategic functions of PetroSA are to make it possible for the Government of the Republic of South Africa to:

  • Improve the supply of fuel, oil and gas to the country
  • Drive transformation initiatives in the South African oil, gas, fuels and petrochemicals value chain
  • Mitigate the impact of oil price variations and foreign currency fluctuations
  • Access upstream petroleum assets for the benefit of the citizens of Republic of South Africa
  • Manage the contingency crude oil reserves and the strategic petroleum assets of the Government of the Republic of South Africa
  • Competitively operate PetroSA in a sustainable commercial manner.

The vision of PetroSA is to be the leading provider of sustainable, affordable and quality hydrocarbon-based energy for the benefit of all South Africans whilst ensuring a balanced transition towards cleaner energy.

Core Business Activities

The Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA) has a reputation for producing high-quality and environmentally-friendly products.

PetroSA is also a pioneer of gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology, which is recognised for producing clean fuels. Our core business activities are:

  • The exploration and production of oil and natural gas
  • The production of synthetic fuels from offshore gas at one of the world’s largest Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) refineries in Mossel Bay, South Africa
  • The participation in, and acquisition of, local as well as international upstream petroleum ventures
  • The development of domestic refining and liquid fuels logistical infrastructure
  • The marketing and trading of oil and petrochemicals.

Some of the commodities produced by PetroSA include unleaded petrol, diesel, kerosene (paraffin), propane, distillates, liquid oxygen and nitrogen, eco-fuels and alcohols.

PetroSA’s world-class synthetic fuels and petrochemicals are marketed internationally.
