Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA)

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is a state-owned enterprise responsible for most passenger rail services in the country.

PRASA was established under Section 22 of the Legal Succession to the South African Transport Services Act of 2008 (as amended).

PRASA is a public entity fully owned by the government and reports to the Minister of Transport under the National Government of South Africa.

PRASA is committed to delivering high-quality passenger service and consists of four branches namely: Metrorail – which operates commuter rail services in urban areas, Shosholoza Meyl – which operates regional and intercity rail services, Autopax – which operates regional and intercity coach services, and Intersite – which manages the property owned by PRASA.

Primary Mandate

PRASA’s legal mandate includes providing commuter rail services within metropolitan areas and long-distance (inter-city) rail and bus services within, to, and from South Africa’s borders. This mandate and strategy are implemented in consultation with and under the guidance of the Minister of Transport.

Secondary Mandate

PRASA’s secondary mandate includes generating income through the strategic management and development of its acquired assets, such as its real estate and property portfolio.

Additionally, PRASA will align its activities with key government policies, ensuring alignment with social, economic, and transport objectives, including the National Development Plan (NDP) and the National Land Transport Strategic Framework (NLTSF).

Vision

The vision of PRASA is to be a recognised provider and manufacturer of safe and reliable public passenger services and products.

Mission

The mission of PRASA is to provide safe, predictable, consistent, affordable and quality commuter rail, long-haul passenger rail and long-haul intercity bus services.
