Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, is a public university in South Africa with two campuses, one in George and the other in Gqeberha.
Established in 1882 as Port Elizabeth Art School, it is made up of the former University of Port Elizabeth, Vista University’s Port Elizabeth campus, and the Port Elizabeth Technikon.
Nelson Mandela University has its main administration in the coastal city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape Province.
The University is overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the National Government of South Africa.
Nelson Mandela University prides itself for being the only institution in the world to carry the name of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
