National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) – South Africa

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) that was created to ensure the equitable growth of South Africa’s film and video industry.

The vision of the National Film and Video Foundation is driving industry growth by providing funding solutions, policy interventions, industry research, and skills development initiatives. Serving as a gateway for collaborations amongst South Africans and the rest of the world.

The mission of the National Film and Video Foundation is to be a South African agency enabling a transformed, diversified, and sustainable creative media industry.

The objectives of the National Film and Video Foundation are to:

  • Increase the number of South African films and Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDIs) producing them
  • Increase audience access to South African films
  • Increase the number of people trained in the industry in areas of scarce skills
  • Promote the South African Film Industry locally and internationally
  • Promote social cohesion and the expression of the nation’s stories through film

As a public entity under the the National Government of South Africa, the National Film and Video Foundation does the following;

  • Provides funding for the development, production, marketing, and distribution of films
  • Training and development of filmmakers as well as helping filmmakers represent and market their work internationally
  • Commissioning research and producing industry statistics to provide both the public and stakeholders with valuable insights into the South African film industry
  • Promotes the development of South African film and television audiences
  • Develops talent and skills in the country – with a special emphasis on previously disadvantaged groups
