The Nama Khoi Local Municipality is geographically located in the northwestern region of the Namakwa District Municipality.
Khoisan and Nama people occupied the region for hundreds of years.
As the administrative heart of the region, the Nama Khoi Local Municipality comprises 9 wards and covers an area of 17,990 km² (6,946 square miles), making it the third-largest of six local municipalities in the Namakwa District.
The Nama Khoi Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Khâi-Ma Local Municipality to the east
- Kamiesberg Local Municipality to the south
- The Atlantic Ocean and Richtersveld Local Municipality to the west
- The Republic of Namibia to the north
The administrative headquarters/seat of the Nama Khoi Local Municipality is in Springbok, which also functions as the sub-regional centre for administrative, commercial, and higher-order social facilities.
Springbok is the most densely populated town in the municipality, and it is close to the N7.

Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Nama Khoi Local Municipality has a population of 67,089 people, compared to 46,512 in 2016 and 47,041 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 3.45%.
According to the 2022 Census, 21.4% of the population is under the age of 15, 68.2% is between 15 and 64, and 10.5% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 88.1% of the population in Nama Khoi Local Municipality describe themselves as Coloured, 6.6% as White, 4.2% as Black African, and 0.5% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 95.9% of the population speaks Afrikaans as their first language, 1% speak isiXhosa, and 3.1% speak other languages.
Economy
Mining used to form the backbone of Nama Khoi’s economy, but recently, tourism has been seen as the new frontier for economic development.
Other economic sectors of the Nama Khoi Local Municipality are mining, government departments, and the private sector.
Municipal council and management
The Nama Khoi municipal council comprises 17 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Nine councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 9 wards, while the remaining 8 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, no party obtained a majority on the council. The Democratic Alliance and the Namakwa Civic Movement formed a coalition to govern the municipality.
