The Naledi Local Municipality is geographically located in the central region of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.
The Naledi Local Municipality comprises 9 wards and covers an area of 7,030 km² (2,714 square miles), making it the second-largest of five local municipalities in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, as it accounts for 16% of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of the Naledi Local Municipality is in Vryburg.
The Naledi Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Ratlou Local Municipality in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the north
- Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality to the north and west
- Greater Taung Local Municipality to the west and south
- Mamusa Local Municipality to the south and east
- Tswaing Local Municipality in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the east
Naledi Local Municipality is known as the Texas of South Africa because of the cattle breeding and agricultural activities that take place there.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Naledi Local Municipality has a population of 63,755 people, compared to 68,803 in 2016 and 66,781 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of -0.45%.
According to the 2022 Census, 30.2% of the population is under the age of 15, 64.6% is between 15 and 64, and 5.2% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 74% of the population in the Greater Taung Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 14.7% as Coloured, 9.5% as White, and 1.1% as Indian/Asian.

According to the 2022 Census, 68.8% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 23.8% speak Afrikaans, 3.4% speak English, and 4% speak other languages.

Municipal council and management
The municipality is under S139 administration, effective from January 2022.
The Naledi municipal council is comprised of 18 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Nine councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 9 wards, while the remaining 9 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 10 seats on the council.
