The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature (MPL) is the legislature of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa and is part of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature was established in 1994 in terms of the Constitution of South Africa. Consequently, this legislature has the constitutional mandate of lawmaking, oversight of the Executive, and facilitation of public involvement and participation.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature consists of 51 members who are elected for a five-year period from the political parties that contested a provincial election and won seats, which are allocated in terms of proportional representation.
The vision of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is to be a people-centred African world-class legislature.
The mission of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is to hold the Executive and other state organs accountable through intensified oversight, enhanced public involvement and effective lawmaking supported by professional administrative service’.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature has also adopted strategic outcome-orientated goals and several strategic objectives to ensure that it is able to achieve its vision and mission, and also fulfil its constitutional mandate of lawmaking, oversight, and public participation and involvement.
As an important institution in the province, the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is the voice of the people and it remains the bedrock of representative democracy.
The Seventh Provincial Legislature of the Mpumalanga province was elected on 29 May 2024 in South Africa’s 2024 general elections. A majority of the members belong to the African National Congress (ANC).
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is located in Mbombela (previously known as Nelspruit).
