About
The Moses Kotane Local Municipality was established in 2000 in terms of section 12 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998 as a local Municipality.
The municipality is named after South African activist and politician, Moses Kotane, who was the secretary general of the South African Communist Party from 1939 until his death in 1978.
The Moses Kotane Local Municipality is geographically located in the northwestern region of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.
The Moses Kotane Local Municipality comprises 35 wards and covers an area of 5,726 km² (2,211 square miles), making it the largest of five local municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District, accounting for a third of its geographical area.
Moses Kotane Local Municipality has its administrative headquarters/seat in Mogwase, as well as satellite offices in Madikwe.
The Moses Kotane Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Madibeng Local Municipality to the east
- Rustenburg and Kgetlengrivier Local Municipalities to the south
- Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality to the west
- Thabazimbi Local Municipality in the Waterberg District Municipality in the Limpopo Province to the north
The Moses Kotane Local Municipality is mostly rural, comprising 107 villages and two formal townships of Madikwe and Mogwase.
The Municipality has a predominantly Black African population with fewer Coloured, Indian, and White groups who are mostly residing in Sun City residence and Mogwase Unit 2.
The N4 Corridor, which is the east-west bound road connecting Rustenburg and Pretoria, runs through the south of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality. The R510 north-south bound road connects the Moses Kotane Local Municipality to the North.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Moses Kotane Local Municipality has a population of 265,668 people, compared to 243,648 in 2016 and 242,554 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.88%.
According to the 2022 Census, 27.5% of the population is under the age of 15, 64.3% is between 15 and 64, and 8.2% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 98.3% of the population in Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 0.8% as White, 0.5% as Indian/Asian, and 0.3% as Coloured.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 81.6% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 4.1% speak isiZulu, 3.4% speak isiXhosa, 3% speak English, and 7.9% speak other languages.
Economy
The main economic sectors of Moses Kotane Local Municipality are tourism, mining, and agriculture, owing to its location within the major tourism and mining belt of the province, Pilanesberg and Sun City. Industries and social services also form a critical part of the local economy.
Municipal council and management
The Moses Kotane municipal council is comprised of 69 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Thirty-five councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 35 wards, while the remaining 34 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the 2021 South African municipal elections, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 46 seats on the council.
