About

Moretele Local Municipality was established in 2000 and is named after the Moretele River, or ‘Noka ya Moretele’ as referred to in Setswana, which runs through the area.

The Moretele Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in an area called Moretele, which is situated far north of Pretoria in the North West Province.

The municipality is strategically located to join four provinces, namely North West, Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga.

Moretele Local Municipality comprises 26 wards, which are made up of 74 villages and plots, and covers an area of 1,498 km² (578 square miles), making it the smallest of five local municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District, as it accounts for 8% of its geographical area

The Municipality is made up of 74 villages and plots, with most villages being ruled by four traditional leaders (Dikgosi) who are recognized by law and who all represent their respective tribes/communities in council.

The administrative headquarters/seat of Moretele Local Municipality is in Makapanstad.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, Moretele Local Municipality has a population of 219,120 people, compared to 191,306 in 2016, and 188,533 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.46%.

According to the 2022 Census, 28.7% of the population is under the age of 15, 62.8% is between 15 and 64, and 8.5% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 99.4% of the population in Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 0.2% as White, 0.2% as Coloured, and 0.1% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 51.7% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 18.4% speak Xitsonga, 13.9% speak Sepedi, 3.5% speak isiZulu, and 12.5% speak other languages.

Economy

The spatial development framework of the municipality is shaped by the rich agricultural history characterizing large pieces of land in the area. It is against this backdrop that agriculture has become a focal point in all economic development prospects for the municipality constituency.

The municipality has vast tracts of land that can be used to harness economic development opportunities. It is believed that livestock farming is the main type of farming activity that is carried out in the local municipality.

The tourism sector in the Moretele Local Municipality is not well established.

Municipal council and management

The Moretele municipal council is comprised of 52 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.

Twenty-six councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 26 wards, while the remaining 26 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.

In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 35 seats on the council.
