About
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality was established on 5 December 2000 when various municipalities and councils that had previously served the Potgietersrus and surrounding areas were integrated.
The following local authorities were amalgamated to form the new municipality: Bakenberg, Greater Potgietersrus, and Koedoesrand/Rebone.
Mogalakwena Local Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the Waterberg District Municipality.
The municipality is one of the five municipalities in the district and is named after the Mogalakwena River.
The area constitutes a cosmopolitan of different chiefdoms: mainly bakone (masenya le Matlala ), Lebelo kgomo, Transvaal Ndebele Langa & Kekana, phokela, Lekalekale, babirwa.
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality covers an area of 6,156 km² (2,377 square miles) making it the second-smallest local municipality in the Waterberg District.
The administrative headquarters/seat of the Mogalakwena Local Municipality is in Mokopane (previously known as Potgietersrus).
The municipality is divided into 32 wards.
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Blouberg Local Municipality in the Capricorn District Municipality to the north
- Lephalale Local Municipality to the north and west
- Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality to the west and south
- Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality in the Capricorn District Municipality to the southeast
- Polokwane Local Municipality in the Capricorn District Municipality to the east
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Mogalakwena Local Municipality has a population of 378,198 people, compared to 325,291 in 2016, and 304,585 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 2.1%.
According to the 2022 Census, 30.5% of the population is under the age of 15, 61.6% is between 15 and 64, and 7.8% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 96.1% of the population in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 3% as White, 0.5% as Indian/Asian, and 0.1% as Coloured.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 73.5% of the population speaks Sepedi as their first language, 9.1% speak Xitsonga, 6.6% speak isiNdebele, 3.1% speak Afrikaans, and 7.7% speak other languages.

Municipal council and management
The Mogalakwena municipal council is comprised of 64 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Thirty-two councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 32 wards, while the remaining 32 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 42 seats on the council.
