Midvaal Local Municipality is geographically situated in the central part of the Sedibeng District Municipality.

The municipality’s name references its geographical location between the Johannesburg and East Rand areas and the Vaal and Vereeniging areas.

Midvaal Local Municipality covers an area of 1,722 km² (665 square miles) making it the largest local municipality in the Sedibeng District as it accounts for almost half of the district’s geographical area.

The municipality is predominantly rural and extensive farming constitutes approximately 50% of the total area of jurisdiction

The administrative headquarters/seat of Midvaal Local Municipality is in Meyerton.

Midvaal Local Municipality has two notable natural features namely the Vaal River and the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, which form the southern boundary of the municipality and the Gauteng Province.

Secondary natural features that play a significant role in the development dynamics of the municipality are the Vaal Dam, the Klip River, and the Suikerbosrand River.

Major transport routes that traverse the municipality are the R59 freeway (Midvaal’s major development corridor), the N1, N3, and R82.

Midvaal is home to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) which was established in Henley on Klip in January 2007.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, Midvaal Local Municipality has a population of 112,254 people, compared to 111,612 in 2016, and 95,301 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.59%.

According to the 2022 Census, 22.3% of the population is under the age of 15, 70.4% is between 15 and 64, and 7.3% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 69.7% of the population in Midvaal Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 27.3% as White, 1.5% as Coloured, and 1.3% as Indian/Asian.

According to the 2022 Census, 30.9% of the population speaks Afrikaans as their first language, 27.9% speak Sesotho, 14% speak English, 11.8% speak isiZulu, and 15.4% speak other languages.
