Melville is a coastal resort village situated along the R102 Regional Route on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, exactly halfway between Port Shepstone (11 km) – the economic hub of the South Coast and Hibberdene (12 km).
This seaside village is bordered by the coastal villages of Sunwich Port to the south and Pumula to the north.
Melville has two beaches within its boundaries, namely Melville Beach and Banana Beach. However, there are larger beaches in the greater vicinity of the Hibiscus Coast area, also found in Port Shepstone, Hibberdene, Margate, St Michael’s-on-Sea, Uvongo, and Ramsgate.
As a coastal resort area, Melville also contains a few recreational areas such as Illanga Resort & Caravan Park, the Banana Beach Holiday Resort, and the Lalanathi Caravan & Camping Park.
Melville falls within the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, which is part of the Ugu District Municipality.
Melville is a quiet and small coastal village often regarded as something of an extension of Port Shepstone. As a small village, Melville has no shopping centre (the nearest shopping facilities are found in Port Shepstone and Hibberdene) or public transport to speak of.
Melville has very little to no development in the area. The village remains largely unspoilt as it is abundantly covered by indigenous subtropical vegetation, most notably wild banana trees (hence it has a beach called Banana Beach), making it a lush and green destination.
