McGregor Museum

McGregor Museum is a multidisciplinary museum which serves Kimberley and the Northern Cape province of South Africa.

McGregor Museum is aided financially by the Northern Cape Provincial Government through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The McGregor Museum was officially founded on the 24th September 1907 when the title deeds were handed over to the Management Committee. Prior to this, there had been several calls for the establishment of a Museum in Kimberley but nothing had materialised.

Eventually, Mrs McGregor, the widow of a previous mayor of Kimberley, Alexander McGregor, donated the funds necessary to establish the Museum. The official title was to be the Alexander McGregor Memorial Museum and it has been affectionately known over the last one hundred years as “the McGregor”.

The vision of the McGregor Museum is to know and conserve our past and present for the future.

The mission of the McGregor Museum is to research and conserve the natural and cultural history and diversity of the Northern Cape province of South Africa, and promote an awareness thereof through service excellence.

The strategic objectives of the McGregor Museum are:

  • Providing a transformed museum by increasing the number of museum visitors
  • Providing outreach programmes to learners, educators and the public
  • Providing brochures and publications for public consumption
  • Providing exhibitions for public viewing

In May 2014, McGregor Museum was declared a Provincial Public Entity, effective from 1 April 2014.
