The Maquassi Hills Local Municipality is geographically located in the southern region of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.

The Maquassi Hills Local Municipality comprises 11 wards and covers an area of 4,671 km² (1,803 square miles), making it the second-largest of three local municipalities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, as it accounts for a third of its geographical area.

Wolmaransstad serves a large community and is an important diamond-buying centre. It’s a farming and prospecting community, forming part of the area where the highest concentration of earth-moving equipment in the world can be found.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.45%.

According to the 2022 Census, 31% of the population is under the age of 15, 63.8% is between 15 and 64, and 5.2% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 88.7% of the population in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 8.2% as White, 2.3% as Coloured, and 0.4% as Indian/Asian.

According to the 2022 Census, 72.5% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 10.7% speak Afrikaans, 6.6% speak Sesotho, 4.1% speak isiXhosa, and 6.1% speak other languages.
