About

The Mamusa Local Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, about 70 kilometres from Vryburg, where the district municipality offices reside.

The Mamusa Local Municipality comprises 8 wards and covers an area of 3,614 km² (1,395 square miles), making it the smallest of five local municipalities in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, as it accounts for about 7.8% of its geographical area.

The administrative headquarters/seat of the Mamusa Local Municipality is in Schweizer-Reneke, a rural area situated on the banks of the Harts River and at the foot of the Mamusa hills.

Schweizer-Reneke is the only town in the Mamusa Local Municipality and is surrounded by agricultural farms. The town is closer to the township called Ipelegeng.

Roads radiate outwards from Schweizer-Reneke towards Vryburg, Delareyville, Wolmaransstad, Bloemhof, Christiana and Pudimoe.

The road from Vryburg to Bloemhof is designated as provincial route R34, while the others are designated as regional routes R504 (Pudimoe–Wolmaransstad) and R506 (Christiana–Delareyville). The Coligny–Vermaas–Pudimoe railway line also passes through the municipality.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Mamusa Local Municipality has a population of 70,483 people, compared to 64,000 in 2016 and 60,355 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.51%.

According to the 2022 Census, 32.8% of the population is under the age of 15, 62.2% is between 15 and 64, and 5% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 91.4% of the population in the Greater Taung Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 5.5% as White, 2.2% as Coloured, and 0.5% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 85.1% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 7.2% speak Afrikaans, 2.2% speak Sesotho, 1.7% speak English, and 3.8% speak other languages.

The main economic sectors of the Mamusa Local Municipality are alluvial mining and agriculture.

Municipal council and management

The Mamusa municipal council is comprised of 16 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.

Eight councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 8 wards, while the remaining 8 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.

In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of 9 seats on the council.
