About
Magareng Local Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the Frances Baard District Municipality.
The name Magareng is derived from a Setswana word meaning “in the middle”, and reflects the geographic location of the municipality compared to other areas.
Magareng Local Municipality comprises 6 wards and covers an area of 1,546 km² (597 square miles), making it the second-smallest of four local municipalities in the Frances Baard District, as it accounts for 12% of its geographical area.
Magareng Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Phokwane Local Municipality to the north
- Greater Taung Local Municipality in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in the North West Province to the west
- Dikgatlong Local Municipality to the west
- Sol Plaatje Local Municipality to the south
- Tokologo Local Municipality in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality in the Free State Province to the east
- Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in the North West Province to the east
The administrative headquarters/seat of Magareng Local Municipality is in Warrenton, on the banks of the Vaal River and about 75 kilometres north of Kimberley.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, Magareng Local Municipality has a population of 26,816 people, compared to 24,059 in 2016 and 24,204 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1%.
According to the 2022 Census, 27.3% of the population is under the age of 15, 65.1% is between 15 and 64, and 7.6% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 80% of the population in Magareng Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 13.9% as Coloured, 5.1% as White, and 0.7% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 67.2% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 21.2% speak Afrikaans, 3.6% speak isiXhosa, 2.2% speak Sesotho, and 5.8% speak other languages.
