About
Madibeng Local Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, between the Magaliesberg and Witwatersrand, 60 kilometres from Rustenburg and 50 kilometres north of Pretoria.
The Madibeng Municipality is strategically located within proximity to Gauteng, Limpopo, Harare (in Zimbabwe), and the Maputo Harbour, and is positioned along the Heritage Route, linking the World Heritage Site with the Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves.
Madibeng Local Municipality comprises 41 wards and covers an area of 3,720 km² (1,436 square miles), making it the third-largest of five local municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District.

Madibeng Local Municipality consists of several rural and urban areas, farm portions, and villages.
The municipality enjoys the privilege of being centrally located in the North West Province, with Rustenburg, Pretoria, Krugersdorp, and Johannesburg as bordering neighbours. These neighbouring towns are easily accessible through road networks, meaning that Madibeng residents are not confined to employment in the Madibeng jurisdiction alone, but can easily commute to workplaces in other cities and towns.
Madibeng Local Municipality can also be reached by train and has an airport for light aircraft. The National and soon to be International Lanseria Airport is situated a mere 40 kilometers from Brits.
Madibeng has a properly established and serviced industrial area consisting of a wide variety of industries, and therefore, manufacturing is viewed as one of the dominant sectors.
The turf soil found in Madibeng Local Municipality is ideal for vegetation and Brits is known for the big variety and quality of fruit and vegetables supplied to, amongst others, the Tshwane Market.
The municipality is home to the popular tourist area of Hartbeespoort Dam, which is South Africa’s second most visited place after the Waterfront in Cape Town.
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, Madibeng Local Municipality has a population of 522,566 people, compared to 536,110 in 2016 and 475,796 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.91%.
According to the 2022 Census, 26.3% of the population is under the age of 15, 67.9% is between 15 and 64, and 5.8% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 89.3% of the population in Madibeng Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 8.9% as White, 0.9% as Coloured, and 0.5% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 43.5% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 11% speak Xitsonga, 9% speak Afrikaans, 7.9% speak Sepedi, and 28.6% speak other languages.
Economy
Madibeng Local Municipality is known for its diversified economy. Mining is the predominant economic activity with Madibeng being the world‘s third largest chrome producer, which also includes the richest Platinum Group Metals Reserve (situated on the Merensky Reef). Granite is another mining component.
Other main economic sectors in the municipality are manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism.
Municipal council and management
The municipality is under S139 administration, effective from January 2022.
The Madibeng municipal council is comprised of 82 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Forty-one councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 41 wards, while the remaining 41 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) won 44 seats on the council, giving it an absolute majority.

Corruption
Madibeng Local Municipality has suffered from massive corruption and has spent over R7 million on forensic investigations. Despite senior officials being identified, no action has been taken. Irregular expenditure was up to R2.6 billion in the 2020/21 financial year.
As of 2024, the Madibeng Local Municipality owed Eskom and the City of Tshwane millions, while much of the community went without working roads, sanitation, electricity, water, housing, and sewerage.
