About

Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality was established on 6 December 2000, and is made up of the disestablished municipalities of Bloemhof and Christiana.

The Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality is geographically located in the southeastern region of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.

The Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality comprises 7 wards and covers an area of 3,654 km² (1,411 square miles), making it the second-smallest of five local municipalities in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.

The administrative headquarters/seat of the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality is in Christiana.

Present-day Lekwa-Teemane consists of Christiana (and surrounding farm areas), Bloemhof (and surrounding farm areas), Boitumelong, Geluksoord, Coverdale, Salamat, and Utlwanang.

The municipality is home to the Bloemhof Dam, a popular tourist attraction.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality has a population of 59,815 people, compared to 56,025 in 2016 and 53,248 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 1.13%.

According to the 2022 Census, 30.9% of the population is under the age of 15, 64% is between 15 and 64, and 5.1% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 81.2% of the population in the Greater Taung Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 10.4% as White, 7.4% as Coloured, and 0.6% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 64.4% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 17.8% speak Afrikaans, 6% speak Sesotho, 5.5% speak isiXhosa, and 6.3% speak other languages.

Municipal council and management

The Lekwa-Teemane municipal council is comprised of 17 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.

Seven councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 7 wards, while the remaining 7 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.

In the election of 1 November 2021, the African National Congress (ANC) lost its outright majority on the council.
