Langeberg Local Municipality is geographically situated in the southeastern part of the Cape Winelands District Municipality.
Before 28 August 2009, Langeberg Local Municipality was known as Breede River/Winelands Municipality.
Langeberg Local Municipality covers an area of 4,518 km² (1,744 square miles) making it the second-largest local municipality in the Cape Winelands District as it covers almost a quarter of its geographical area.
The municipality is divided into 12 wards.
The administrative headquarters/seat of Langeberg Local Municipality is in Ashton.
Langeberg Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Breede Valley Local Municipality to the west and north
- Laingsburg Local Municipality in the Central Karoo District to the northeast
- Kannaland Local Municipality in the Garden Route District to the northeast
- Swellendam Local Municipality in the Overberg District to the east and southeast
- Theewaterskloof Local Municipality in the Overberg District to the south
Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, Langeberg Local Municipality has a population of 94,045 residents, compared to 105,483 in 2016, and 97,724 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of -0.37%.
According to the 2022 Census, 22.6% of the population is under the age of 15, 69.7% is between 15 and 64, and 7.6% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 61.7% of the population in Langeberg Local Municipality describe themselves as Coloured, 24.5% as Black African, 12.9% as White, and 0.1% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 82.5% of the population speaks Afrikaans as their first language, 10.7% speak isiXhosa, 3.1% speak English, 1.3% speak Sesotho, and 2.4% speak other languages.

Municipal council and management
The Langeberg municipal council is comprised of 23 members elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Twelve councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in 12 wards, while the remaining 11 are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received.
In the election of 1 November 2021, no party won a majority of seats on the council. The Democratic Alliance (DA) then formed a majority coalition with the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) to govern Langeberg Local Municipality.
