Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality is geographically located in the southwestern region of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.

The municipality is situated on the N4 toll road from Pretoria to Botswana and acts as a gateway from Johannesburg to Botswana.

Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality comprises 7 wards and covers an area of 3,973 km² (1,534 square miles), making it the second-largest of five local municipalities in the Bojanala Platinum District.

Kgetlengrivier’s mining activities are related to diamonds, aggregate sand, and slate. It has a strong competitive advantage in terms of its climate, numerous dams, and biodiversity.

Population

According to the South African National Census of 2022, Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality has a population of 54,759 people, compared to 59,562 in 2016 and 51,049 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.68%.

According to the 2022 Census, 28.6% of the population is under the age of 15, 65.7% is between 15 and 64, and 5.6% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 80.1% of the population in Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 16.8% as White, 1.7% as Coloured, and 0.9% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 69.2% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 18% speak Afrikaans, 4.4% speak English, 1.5% speak isiZulu, and 6.9% speak other languages.
