About
The Kgatelopele Local Municipality is geographically located in the eastern region of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality. It was formerly known as the Danielskuil Municipal District or Area.
The name Kgatelopele is a Setswana word meaning “progress”.
The Kgatelopele Local Municipality covers an area of 2,478 km² (957 square miles), making it the smallest of five local municipalities in the ZF Mgcawu District, as it accounts for only 2% of its geographical area.
The Kgatelopele Local Municipality is bordered by:
- Tsantsabane Local Municipality to the west and south
- Siyancuma Local Municipality in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality to the south
- Dikgatlong Local Municipality in the Frances Baard District Municipality to the east
- Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality to the north

Population
According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Kgatelopele Local Municipality has a population of 19,854 people, compared to 20,691 in 2016 and 18,687 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.59%.
According to the 2022 Census, 26.6% of the population is under the age of 15, 68.2% is between 15 and 64, and 5.2% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 49.9% of the population in the Kgatelopele Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 38.9% as Coloured, 9.8% as White, and 0.7% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 58.3% of the population speaks Afrikaans as their first language, 32.7% speak Setswana, 2.9% speak English, 1.6% speak isiXhosa, and 4.5% speak other languages.
