The municipality comprises 6 wards and is named after a mountain range in the region, the Karee Mountains.
The Kareeberg Local Municipality covers an area of 17,701 km² (6,834 square miles), making it the second-largest of eight local municipalities in the Pixley Ka Seme District, as it accounts for 17% of its geographical area.
The administrative headquarters/seat of Kareeberg Local Municipality is in Carnarvon.
The Kareeberg Local Municipality is bordered by:
