About

The Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality was created at the local government elections of 18 May 2011, by merging the Kagisano and Molopo municipalities.

The Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality is geographically located in the western and northern regions of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.

The Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality comprises 15 wards and covers an area of 23,827 km² (9,200 square miles), making it the largest of the five local municipalities in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, as it accounts for just over half of its geographical area

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality has a population of 112,130 people, compared to 102,703 in 2016 and 105,789 in 2011.

The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.57%.

According to the 2022 Census, 34.9% of the population is under the age of 15, 59% is between 15 and 64, and 6.1% is over 65.

Racial makeup

According to the 2022 Census, 96% of the population in the Greater Taung Local Municipality describe themselves as Black African, 2.1% as White, 1.4% as Coloured, and 0.2% as Indian/Asian.

Languages

According to the 2022 Census, 90.3% of the population speaks Setswana as their first language, 3.4% speak Afrikaans, 1.6% speak English, and 4.7% speak other languages.
