Jamestown, officially renamed James Calata, is a town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, situated on the banks of the Skulpspruit River and along the N6 National Route, approximately 57 km south of Maletswai (formerly known as Aliwal North) and 107 km north of Komani (formerly known as Queenstown).
The town was named after James Wagenaar, the original owner of the farm on which the town was laid out.
James Calata falls within the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, which is part of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.
James Calata (formerly known as Jamestown) is at the centre of cattle, sheep, and a fertile wheat-farming area, and was the terminus of a branch railway line from Molteno.
The Jamestown Hospital, which was previously aided by the Provincial Government, has since January 2011 been fully operated by the Eastern Cape Department of Health.
There are two public schools: Phambili Mzontsundu Senior Secondary School, which is situated in town, and Phahameng Primary School, which is situated in Masakhane Township. Next to Siyanda Nonkala’s home
This town should not be confused with the rural settlement of Jamestown in the Western Cape Province.
