Herschel is a small settlement situated along the R392 Regional Route in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, approximately 19 km north of Lady Grey and 58 km north-east of Aliwal North (officially renamed Maletswai).
Herschel falls within the Senqu Local Municipality, which is part of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.
History
The village was founded in 1879, and it was named after the astronomer Sir John Herschel, who worked in the Cape Colony from 1834 to 1838, making observations of Halley’s Comet amongst his other astronomical work.
