Hamburg is a small town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, situated on the coast between the coastal city of East London and the beach resort town of Port Alfred.
Hamburg is known as a village and holiday resort town, located on the southern bank of the Keiskamma River, approximately 3 km from its mouth, 95 km south-east of Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) by car, 42.8 km south-east of Peddie, and 87 km south-west of East London.
Hamburg falls within the Ngqushwa Local Municipality and the Amathole District Municipality.
History
The town was established in 1857 by members of the British-German Legion after the Crimean War and was named after the city of Hamburg in Germany.
Between 1961 and 1994, the town was part of the Bantustan of Ciskei.
