Gariep Dam Town

Gariep Dam is a town in Xhariep District Municipality in the Free State province of South Africa.

Gariep Dam town is situated on the northern bank of the Orange River, 50 km west of Bethulie and 48 km north-east of Colesberg.

The town was laid out in 1965-66 to accommodate the builders of the dam. The previous name is Afrikaans and means “Orange (River) power”. The town acquired its current name in 1996.

Surrounded by nature reserves, the Gariep Dam lies in a central location on the Southern border of the Free State where it borders the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces.

With only around 284 properties and a permanent resident population of just 1,500, it is a tranquil and safe environment with clean air. It offers one of the best rural lifestyles and climates in the country.
