About
The Fezile Dabi District Municipality is geographically situated in the part of the Free State province.
The District was established in December 2000 following the local government elections in the same month.
Previously, it was known as the Northern Free State District Municipality.
The headquarters/seat of the District is in Sasolburg.
The Fezile Dabi District Municipality covers an area of 20,668 km² (7,980 square miles) and is the smallest District in the Free State Province, making up just 16% of its geographical area.
The District is divided into four local municipalities namely;
- Mafube Local Municipality
- Metsimaholo Local Municipality
- Moqhaka Local Municipality
- Ngwathe Local Municipality
The Fezile Dabi District Municipality is bordered by Lejweleputswa District Municipality to the west and southwest, Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality to the south and east, Gert Sibande District Municipality in Mpumalanga to the northeast, Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng to the north, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West Province to the northwest.
The Fezile Dabi District Municipality is home to the Vredefort Dome (the largest and oldest known meteorite impact structure on Earth), the main attraction site in the district.
The District is known as the grain/maize basket for South Africa and is host to many historic battlefields.
Fezile Dabi is also home to Sasol a world-class leader in the production of fuels, waxes, chemicals, and low-cost feedstock from coal. Sasol was formed in 1950 in the city of Sasolburg.
The town of Koppies is becoming known for its tourist attractions. Specific reference is made to the R82 Battlefield Route, which consists of several historical battlefields.

According to the South African National Census of 2022, the Fezile Dabi District Municipality has a population of 509,912 residents, compared to 494,777 in 2016, and 488,036 in 2011.
The municipality has a population growth per annum of 0.43%.
According to the 2022 Census, 25.5% of the population is under the age of 15, 66.4% is between 15 and 64, and 8.1% is over 65.
Racial makeup
According to the 2022 Census, 85.28% of the Fezile Dabi District Municipality population describe themselves as Black African, 12.17% as White, 2.06% as Coloured, and 0.49% as Indian/Asian.
Languages
According to the 2022 Census, 67.3% of the population speaks Sesotho as their first language, 13.8% speak Afrikaans, 6.0% speak isiXhosa, 5.6% speak isiZulu, and 7.3% speak other languages.

The district’s main economic sectors are trade (22%), community services (20%), manufacturing (13%), households (13%), agriculture (12%), finance (7%), construction (6%), and transport (5%).
